Why Retro Web Design Is Taking Over the Internet

The digital throwback look we’re seeing everywhere is part of a big movement taking us back to the old internet aesthetic.

This is a comedic video essay about how weird, outdated aesthetics from the early web, like Windows XP windows, pixel art, VHS filters, digicams, and other weird design trends, have crept into modern design, branding, fashion, and music. This old internet aesthetic or “digital throwback” look is intentionally ugly and nostalgic in a way that feels more human than anything our phones can capture.

This video goes over how the old internet’s design trends are coming back through album covers and music videos, why this is happening, and a bigger-picture look at the whole phenomenon. Also don’t say anything about frutiger aero. I can’t take that word anymore.
