If you run a web design agency and you’re still saying “I build websites for anyone and everyone,” this video is for you. Here’s how to pick a niche as a web designer — with a method so simple it takes five minutes. Because here’s the problem: when a plumber is choosing between you (“I make all types of websites”) and someone who specializes in websites just for plumbers, they’re picking the specialist every time. You need to answer the question: why you?
The method is this — look at your own portfolio. Who have you already built the most websites for? Which clients were the happiest? That’s your niche. When prospects ask “can you show me an example of a site you’ve built for someone like me?” (and they will ask), the more niched you are, the more examples you have, and the higher your conversion rate. If you’re going to spend time and money on cold outreach or ads targeting a specific audience anyway, why would you pick anything other than the audience you convert best with?
And don’t worry about the market being too small. I show the real numbers in the video: 85,000 plumbers, 55,000 HVAC contractors, 42,000 air conditioning contractors, 100,000 roofing contractors. If you’re trying to land 1-2 new clients a month, one niche is more than enough — and you can always expand later. Amazon started with just books. My own agency started helping only web designers with cold outreach, and now covers ten services (one client, doing web design + SEO, booked 95 appointments last quarter from 793 leads with targeted outreach). Start narrow, expand from strength.
The big misconception: you are NOT missing out on business by niching down. You’re missing out by NOT niching down — because every prospect in the marketplace can pick a specialist over you.
