I haven’t touched widgets for a while. Once the site editor used the Gutenberg plugin, I almost completely abandoned the old sidebar paradigm in favor of block templates.
Reactivating the old theme and jumping into the widget screen feels like traveling to a bygone era. After months of deep embedding block themes, it is hard to imagine going back to the sidebar widget system that most WordPress users still use today.
WordPress 5.8 adds a small block outside of the content editor. However, it feels like a superficial update of a dying system, a system that is not always effective. Block-based widgets are part of the transition phase between classic WordPress and the future, centered on a complete site editor. Once most themes are on top of blocks, the need for widgets will decrease. The section reader and block statements do not support the old sidebar system. Instead, users will be able to place blocks.
